Welcoming Universities is driving a fundamental shift in Australian higher education—one that goes beyond policies and checkboxes to create real, lasting change. Our mission is simple but powerful: to transform universities into places where every student and staff member feels truly welcomed, included, and that they belong.
Despite universities being centres of knowledge on equity, diversity, and inclusion, too many students, and staff—especially those from underrepresented, vulnerable, or equity backgrounds—continue to feel unwelcome, disconnected, and excluded. International students often report feeling like commodities rather than valued members of the academic community. First Nations staff are leaving the sector at alarming rates. Structural and interpersonal racism, gender-based violence, and mental health concerns remain persistent issues. These challenges aren’t just individual struggles; they have sector-wide consequences, impacting student attrition, staff retention, and the overall success of our universities.
Welcoming Universities exists to change this. We are here to help universities move from talking about inclusion to embedding it into their DNA. Our evidence-based, strategic approach ensures that this work isn’t an extra burden—it’s a solution to some of the most pressing challenges facing the sector. By fostering a genuine culture of belonging, we help institutions create safer, more inclusive campuses, improve student outcomes, and build workplaces where staff want to stay and thrive.
The Australian Universities Accord has reinforced what we’ve known all along: for higher education to succeed, equity must be at its core. Welcoming Universities began this work years before the Accord’s release, and today, we stand ready to support universities in making belonging a reality.
Now is the time to act. Join us in shaping the future of Australian higher education—where every student and staff member feels valued, connected, and empowered to be their authentic selves.
