Rethinking Australia’s treatment of International Students
Over the past decade, Australia has made substantial investments in promoting its higher education sector as one of the nation’s leading exports. Through targeted marketing and advertising campaigns, institutions highlight Australia’s vibrant campus life, cultural diversity, and post-graduate opportunities, attracting a significant intake of students from around the world, which is often a critical part of the financial sustainability of many universities.
Despite this robust international enrolment, there are many concerns from students and various international education organisations and groups that international students are valued only for their financial contribution to universities, and do not receive adequate attention in institutional policies, programs, support services within universities and across communities, or broader national discussions.
Considering these concerns, Welcoming Universities initiated a focused study to better understand international students’ day-to-day realities. Employing a combination of surveys, groups, and conceptual analysis, this research aims to move beyond promotional narratives and offer a nuanced perspective on how international students navigate the academic, social, and cultural dimensions of university life in Australia.
Ultimately, the findings provide practical recommendations for university leadership, university administrators, policymakers, local, state and federal governments, and community stakeholders, supporting the creation of more genuinely inclusive and equitable learning environments.
