At Flinders University, supporting international students doesn’t stop at the classroom door. One standout initiative led by the International Student Services (ISS) Team is helping students prepare for what comes next—life and work beyond study.
Twice a year, the team delivers an in-person Post-Study Information Session, timed just before the end of semester. Designed specifically for international students, the session provides practical, up-to-date information to help them navigate their post-study options with clarity and confidence. According to Jose (International Student Services), “It’s a popular offering—regularly drawing over 150 attendees—and a key part of the team’s commitment to empower students as co-creators of their own success.”
The session is built on strong partnerships. Since 2022, the ISS Team has worked closely with the Department of Home Affairs, and South Australia’s Department of State Development to deliver accurate and timely content. In 2024, the Australian Border Force joined the collaboration, bringing expertise in areas like biosecurity, work rights, and the prevention of worker exploitation. These partnerships not only strengthen the content but also align the sessions with broader government objectives, creating a win-win for students and policymakers alike.
Each 90-minute session is followed by a dedicated Q&A, where students can ask questions directly to representatives from each department. The sessions don’t offer migration advice, but they do offer critical insights into visa conditions, compliance, and current migration policy settings. Students consistently describe them as helpful, timely, and informative giving them a sense of direction at a pivotal point in their journey.
The initiative also supports university staff, who are welcome to attend to deepen their understanding of the regulatory landscape that international students navigate.
The Post-Study Information Session is just one example of how Flinders University is fostering a welcoming, future-focused environment for its international community. By equipping students with knowledge and connecting them with key government stakeholders, the university is helping to build confident, informed graduates ready to take their next steps.
